We all listen to Spotify. At home, on the way to work, at the gym, in the car… it has become an application that is part of our lives. But, did you know which are the most successful songs on the platform in its more than 10 years with us?
Spotify has a relatively short history, as it launched in Europe in 2008 and ended up entering the US market in 2011. As you can see, one of the few that has made the trip in reverse: from Europe to the United States.
Since then, the Stockholm-based company has become the world’s most popular audio streaming service, with 456 million users in 183 markets. There is no music app with users all over the world.
With such a large user base, Spotify’s top artists have seen their biggest hits rack up millions, if not billions of streams. That’s why, in July 2021, Spotify created the Billion Club, a playlist that includes all the songs that have reached a billion milestones.
For this reason, Visual Capitalist decided to create a unique data infographic, so we are going to compile the entire playlist and sort it by decade and artist.
The 10 artists with the most songs with a billion views
|Position||Artist||monthly listening||A number of songs with more than +1,000 mill.|
In the table, we have the top 10 artists, ordered by their number of songs with more than 1 billion streams. Actually, the list includes 11 artists because Shawn Mendes, Bruno Mars, and Coldplay are tied with 5 songs in the billion clubs.
For starters, Ariana Grande is the only female artist in the top 10. Her best-performing song on Spotify is 7 Rings, from her fifth studio album thank u, next. The song has amassed 1.8 billion streams as of February 8, 2019.
Female superstars who narrowly missed out on the top 10 list are Adele, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and Olivia Rodrigo, who have four songs in the billion streams club.
Which top 10 artists have been on the market the longest?
In this context, we measure tenure as the time since the artist’s debut album. In this case, the crown goes to Eminem, who released Infinite in November 1996.
The 11 – track album was released on cassette and vinyl, and according to industry data only sold around 1,000 copies. The album’s title track, Infinite, is the only one available on Spotify, and currently has 33 million streams.
The Billion Club contains over 300 songs, most of them released in the 2010s. This makes sense since Spotify launched at the beginning of that decade and listening to current music is the norm (as much as we love the Beatles).
If you want the image in very high resolution, click here, since the infographic is worth studying in depth. Spotify has changed the music industry like no other. There may be more apps with good music, but no one is at the level of the Stockholm company.
